Understanding Tendinitis 

Understanding and appreciating that movement is a gift, is a good start to living a healthy lifestyle. Too often we breeze through our day without any conscious connection or understanding of the phenomenon going on right under our own skin. The human body is remarkable, and it has no problem letting us know when something is wrong, or when we are doing something it doesn’t like.

Most people today have a general understanding that it is important to keep the muscles of our body strong. It is important to do this to keep the skeletal structure in place, joints stable, and our bodies in motion. While these muscles are hard at work, there are also middle men hard at work. The middle men between muscles and bones are the tendons. The tendon is a fibrous tissue that connects the muscle directly to the bone, this tough and flexible band of tissue plays a major role in our mobility. Day in and day out the muscles of our body contract, forcing tendons into action. Very often, these tendons become irritated. Once irritated, the tendon may become inflamed and movement can become painful, this condition is known as tendinitis .

As quickly as the days go by, it is difficult to observe all of our movements. While not being able to physically see all of our tendons and muscles contracting, and our blood rapidly flowing, it is hard to be conscious of what parts of our body are being overworked or overused. Allowing our bodies to get into a routine of improper movement patterns often leaves our muscles and tendons working overtime, or perhaps more than they are able to handle. You may be a carpenter gripping a hammer every day, a graphic designer relentlessly typing and clicking, an artist working on a masterpiece, or an avid runner hitting the streets everyday. These movements maybe easy to pin point, such as running, or extremely subtle movements like writing or typing. Whatever the case is, doing too much of one particular movement pattern can cause the tendon to become irritated, and your daily life to become painful.

The next cause of tendinitis  may also be caused by something a little more tricky, poor blood flow to one area of your body. When one part of the body is not getting blood delivered at the rate it needs, the body cannot heal itself properly. Once inflammation occurs in the body, the healing process is kicking into gear. The most vital element of our bodies healing process is delivering blood, which delivers oxygen and nutrients. We must do a better job at keeping the one body we have tuned up. When the check engine light in your car goes on, you shouldn’t ignore it. Likewise, we must learn to listen to the warning systems of our bodies. If you are experiencing pain in your body, whether it is a little or a lot, please do not ignore it. What to do if you think you have Tendinitis :

  1. See a doctor! Get checked out by a professional to make sure you know this is the problem
  2. Understand your routine. Learn to be conscious of what you do throughout the day, be on the lookout for repetitive movements.
  3. Let it rest! Don’t allow your pride to let you continue, listen to your body and let your body rest!
  4. Counterbalance is key! Learn the stretches or strengthen exercises necessary to help reverse the issue.
  5. Be patient! Don’t rush back into your routine, give your body time to heal and strengthen.
  6. Make a change. If it happened once, it can happen again. Strive to improve the movement and blood flow of your body.
  7. Gain understanding. Learn more about your body, it will help make connections to potentially avoid issues like tendonitis.
