What They Don’t Know, WILL Hurt Them…

Screen Shot 2016-01-21 at 5.37.13 PMWow….How fast technology is taking the world by storm. The recent advancements in technology are without a doubt incredible! With that being said, it is imperative that parents educate themselves on how detrimental technology could be to the physical, mental, and social development of our youth. Children and young adults are a handful sometimes, the temptation is to give them an iPod touch, iPhone or small gaming or smart device to keep them entertained. Sometimes easy isn’t always best.

By giving children and young adults tech gadgets and gaming devices, we sometimes unknowingly begin the process of poor physical, mental, and social development. Look around these days, children and young adults hunched over looking at small devices for hours at a time, innocently unaware of the dangerous habits developing. Not all advancements in technology are negative. There are some really cool “body motion sensor” video games that have began to come out. These video games encourage movement as well as promote physical activity instead of being sedentary.

Once again, this is the responsibility of the parents. If you allow your children to sit hunched over in front of a small screen for hours straining their eyes and tightening their muscles, then they will. In this day in age, the use of technology is only going to increase. We must all play our part in keeping up with the knowledge to use this new tech safely, and responsibly. It could be easier to keep your kids busy for a few hours by entertaining them with games and phones, but it could be a lot more difficult to fix the injuries, health, posture, movement, and social issues 10 years down the road. Be wise and give your child the best chances of proper development.

Ergonomics expert and physical therapist Bill Case tells parents:  “Take a little more time to observe your children and their habits, you could and should be the influence to steer them on the right course of development.”

Sitting in front of a computerusing a tablet or smart device for hours at a time will only lead you in one direction, unfortunately it is  the wrong one. Allowing a body to settle in these positions will begin to tighten the muscles of the hips, chest, and neck. Soon after, your head will begin to readjust and settle forward, and force your shoulders to round. These are posture deviations known as forward head syndrome and protracting shoulders. Developing these issues will only further develop habits of poor posture as well as neck and back pain. As children, what they don’t know, will hurt them!

Helpful Tips For Responsible Tech Usage

  • Limit the amount of time your children play video games or use smart devices.
